The Holy Trinity Sauce
Hi! It's been a while. I created this blog when I started grad school with the intention that it'll be my creative outlet. Well...that failed. Now that I'm done with school (yay!!!!), I hope to blog more regularly.
To kickstart, I want to share my favorite, go-to base sauce for stir fry and marinade. I call it, my holy trinity sauce. Cue some godly crescendo.
It consists of soy sauce, oyster sauce, and sweet soy sauce. The ratio I usually use is 2:1:1/2. For some variation, I add sesame oil, fish sauce, gochujang, garlic, ginger, honey, maple syrup, etc. Sometimes, I mix alllll of those in.
My favorite way to use the holy trinity sauce is in a veggie + meat/poultry stir fry. Here are some suggestions:
Bok choy (+ beef)
Broccoli + beef (recipe below)
Mixed vegetable like broccoli, carrot, mushroom + choice of protein
Onion, bell peppers, Thai basil, and chicken
It's also a great marinade base. I often add gochujang and sesame oil to it and marinade some chicken thighs or beef with it overnight then bake or grill them.
You can also play around with the proportion of each of the three ingredients depending on what else you're adding to it. For instance, if you're going to add another sweet ingredient like honey or maple syrup, use less sweet soy sauce. If you're adding fish sauce, cut back on the soy sauce to balance out the flavors. Just taste the sauce when you're done and adjust it, if needed, before adding it to your dish.
Here's my quick and easy way to use the holy trinity sauce.
Basic Broccoli and Beef Stir Fry
Ingredients:
2 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp oyster sauce
1/2 tbsp sweet soy sauce
1/2 tsp sesame oil
2 broccoli crowns
10 oz ribeye steak
2 cloves of garlic, minced
1 tbsp olive oil
Directions:
In a small bowl, combine the soy sauce, oyster sauce, sweet soy sauce, and sesame oil. Set aside.
Cut the broccoli crowns into bite sized florets. Then, boil them for about 2 minutes. Drain and set aside.
In the meantime, slice the beef into 1/4" slices and mince the garlic.
Heat up oil in a wok or large frying pan, add the garlic then add the beef after about 30 seconds. Stir fry the beef for 5 minutes or until it's almost cooked.
Next, add the broccoli and the sauce. Stir fry for a few more minutes.
Serve with Jasmine rice.
